2 hurt in Chicago area apartment fire, 16 displaced
An overnight apartment fire in west suburban Westchester has left several people without a place to stay on Tuesday.
WESTCHESTER, Ill. - An overnight apartment fire in west suburban Cook County left two people hurt and several people without a place to stay early Tuesday morning.
The fire started just before 2 a.m. in the two-story, multi-unit building right off of the busy Mannheim Road in Westchester.
Flames prompt evacuation
What we know:
When crews arrived, there was heavy fire coming from the second floor of the building.
Two people were injured while they were trying to escape the flames. They were both hospitalized with minor injuries.
All 16 residents have been left without homes.
Westchester Fire Cpt. Dave Middendorf said all the residents had exited the building before fire crews had arrived.
Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire around 6:30 a.m. as others were boarding up the damaged parts of the building.
The Red Cross was on the scene to assist the displaced residents.
What we don't know:
It was unclear exactly how much the fire cost in terms of damages.
