Easy ways to keep kids sharp over the summer, avoid 'brain drain'
We’re weeks out from the start of a new school year. But if you're looking for ways to jumpstart your kids, there are ways you can get them out of the summer slump.
FOX 32 visited two places offering easy ways for you and your kids to stay sharp and avoid the dreaded summer "brain drain".
On a hot summer day, you won't find Danielle Long and daughter Lizzy at the pool. Instead, Long makes it a priority to keep her 4-year-old engaged and learning.
“I'm trying to keep her active, keep her mind going,” Long said.
At the Harold Washington Library, kids like Lizzy aren't just reading books anymore. You can see them doing science experiments and taking part in hands-on classes. It’s part of the library's "Summer Learning Challenge" - where 14-year-old Maya volunteers.
“It gives you something to do in the summer. Like otherwise I would probably be binging Netflix,” Maya said.
And having something to do can prevent what experts call “the summer slide.” The National Summer Learning Association says most kids lose up to two months of math skills every summer. The library partners with the Museum of Science and Industry to help keep kids sharp.
The museum offers a "Summer Brain Games" program - which sends weekly science ideas to your email inbox.
And while you're trying to keep learning at the forefront - don't forget to make time for some summer activities, too.
