Man charged after being shot by state trooper on South Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - One of two men shot by a state trooper last week in the back seat of a taxi on the South Side has been charged with three felonies.

Jonathan McIntosh, 26, faces two counts of aggravated assault to a police officer and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, according to Illinois State Police.

State troopers were conducting an unrelated traffic stop about 8:30 p.m. Thursday near 77th Street and Vincennes Avenue when a cab pulled up and the driver flagged down the troopers, saying his two passengers refused to pay their fare, state police said.

The troopers walked up to the cab and saw “what appeared to be a gun” in McIntosh’s pocket, state police said. He “did not listen to any of the Trooper’s commands and then pulled out a gun from his pocket,” and one trooper fired two shots after telling him “numerous times to drop the gun,” state police said.

McIntosh was shot twice in the lower torso and taken to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department. He remained hospitalized Monday, police said.

A bullet also hit the toe of the other man, 23, in the back seat, police said. He was treated and released to police custody from St. Bernard Hospital Thursday night. He has not been charged.

A loaded gun was recovered from the scene, state police said.

Bond for McIntosh was set at $450,000 at a Sunday hearing, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. His next court date is Thursday.
