Snow storms that started Sunday evening and continued intermittently through Tuesday morning dropped nearly 4 inches of snow over Chicago.

O’Hare International Airport had recorded 3.7 inches of snow as of 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Midway International Airport had recorded 3.9 inches. West suburban Batavia reported 6.1 inches as of 11:22 a.m.

The snow continued throughout Tuesday morning, coating roads with a fresh layer of snow ahead of the rush-hour commute, but it had tapered off by about noon, according to the weather service.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight for Porter County and until 9 p.m. for Lake County in northwest Indiana, the weather service said. Porter County could see snow accumulations up to 6 inches, while Lake County could get up to 5 inches.

An elevated cold risk is in effect for the Chicago area lasting until Thursday, according to a hazardous weather outlook from the weather service. A high of 24 degrees is forecast for Tuesday with wind chill values as low as 4 degrees below zero. At night, temperatures could reach a low of 10 degrees with wind chills as low as minus 2 degrees.

Wednesday should be mostly sunny with a high of 21 degrees, according to the weather service. That sunshine and warmth should continue through the end of the week with Thursday reaching a high of 32 degrees and Friday reaching a high of 38 degrees.
