Rauner paid $50M in 2015 taxes, earned nearly $200M
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has released his 2015 tax returns showing he earned nearly $200 million and paid about $50 million in federal and state income taxes.
The former venture capitalist also released details Friday about charitable contributions from his family's foundation that totaled more than $11.6 million last year.
Republican Rauner's adjustable gross income in 2015 was $187.6 million. Almost $170 million came from investments.
He paid $43.3 million in federal taxes and $6.9 million in state taxes.
In last year's returns, Rauner's income was $58.3 million and paid more than $18 million in taxes.
Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly says Rauner and his wife, Diana, do not know the source of the increased income because of a blind trust set up when Rauner took office which screens "all financial decisions, and the details behind those decisions."
Contributions from the Rauner Family Foundation included $10,000 to the American Diabetes Association and $100,000 to Teach for America. Yale University and Dartmouth College each received $250,000. Dartmouth is Rauner's alma matter and his wife, Diana, graduated from Yale.
Rauner also poured about $30 million of his personal wealth into support GOP candidates in Tuesday's election, giving money to both political committees and individuals. Those donations are not tax-deductible.
