'Stop Trump's Power Grab' rally to be held in downtown Chicago

Activists are rallying in downtown Chicago today, calling on U.S. Senators to stop President Donald Trump's executive orders and his incoming nominees.

The "Stop Trump's Power Grab" rally started at noon in Daley Plaza, steps away from the Dirksen Federal Building where letters will be delivered to the offices of Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin.

"Too many Democrats voted for Trump's anti-immigrant bill and too many Democrats have voted for Trump's nominees. And what's worse, they have been largely silent in the face of Trump's many racist, homophobic, transphobic, and xenophobic Executive Orders," a statement from Indivisible Chicago read.

The backstory:

Organizers argued that Trump’s actions, including an alleged overreach in halting federal loans and grants, represent a direct challenge to congressional authority.

They also claimed billionaire Elon Musk gained illegal access to the Treasury Department, framing the situation as a "coup."

Dig deeper:

Protesters called on Senate Democrats to disrupt normal legislative processes to block Trump's agenda, including slowing down nominations and approvals. According to Indivisible Chicago, they want the senators to:

  • Oppose all Trump nominees
  • Deny unanimous consent to slow senate proceedings
  • Vote "no" on all cloture
  • Force quorum calls at every opportunity
