Burglary suspect dead after shootout with Chicago police in North Lawndale

A suspect is dead following a shooting involving Chicago police officers in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

What we know:

The incident happened at 10:47 a.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of S. Central Park Avenue.

Five Chicago police officers were responding to a burglary-in-progress call when they encountered the suspect, which led to a foot chase and an exchange of gunfire at several locations, including 18th and Lawndale.

Authorities said the suspect fired at officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect. 

Officers rendered first aid, and the suspect was transported to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The suspect’s identity has not been released.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The officers involved were taken to a hospital for further observation, according to CPD.

Witnesses, Neighbors Speak Out:

Cecilia Victory, a witness, was leaving her home and going to church when the chaos erupted.

"I've been here 55 years. I've never seen anything like this before," Victory said.

Longtime neighbors held a prayer circle following the shooting, saying they hadn't experienced such violent crime on their block in a while.

What's next:

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the incident.

CPD said the officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
