Uber giving refunds after price surge during Tuesday's CTA shutdown

Uber is issuing refunds to customers who experienced higher-than-average prices in the areas affected by the CTA shutdown that occurred on Tuesday.

An Uber spokesperson had the following to say: “Every transportation provider -- public and private -- has a role to play in keeping our communities moving. And due to the tragic incident Tuesday morning, our communities felt stranded. Uber knows that people rely on us to get from A to B, and we’re proud to serve riders in every neighborhood across Chicago. While we took steps to help mitigate the impact on commuters as soon as we learned of the CTA stoppage, we have issued refunds to riders who experienced higher-than-average prices in the affected areas.”

The spokesperson continued: “People were notified by email this morning if they were receiving a refund. This refund will be reflected on the rider's bank or credit card statement in the coming 3-5 business days and they will receive an updated receipt. If they have questions / didn't get an email, they can get in touch with Uber support directly by going to their Uber app, selecting their receipt from Tuesday morning and then selecting the option to get in touch with support."

The following email was sent to Uber riders:

“Due to a tragic incident on Tuesday morning, there was a substantial increase in demand for rides around impacted CTA lines. As soon as we were made aware, our team’s primary aim was to get more drivers out on the road in order to remain a reliable option for Chicagoans.

Hundreds of Chicago drivers helped thousands of people get across the city, but we know that many riders in affected areas faced higher-than-average prices to get where they needed to go.

We’re adjusting the fare from your Tuesday morning trip to reflect the cost on an average morning.  This refund will be reflected on your bank or credit card statement in the coming 3-5 business days and you’ll receive an updated receipt.

We all have a role to play in keeping our communities moving, and Uber is proud to serve you and the City of Chicago.

We’ll see you on the road.”
