GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) — A Florida woman accidentally stepped off an edge at Grand Canyon National Park and plummeted hundreds of feet to her death.
Officials say 35-year-old Colleen Burns of Orlando fell at Ooh Aah Point on Friday, about a mile down the popular South Kaibab Trail.
Burns tried to shift her position to let another tourist take in the view of the Arizona landmark when she lost her footing, a witness told WESH.
“She was stepping out of the way for another gentleman to kind of squeeze in, and unfortunately, Colleen kind of got tripped up on her own feet and fell backwards, fell into the canyon,” said Jessica Roman, who was vacationing with Burns and another friend. “That was the longest, strangest, craziest two seconds of my life.”
The group had just snapped a picture at Ooh Aah Point, Roman said, when Burns fell to her death.
On Friday, Burns uploaded an Instagram photo which appeared to show her sitting on the edge of a cliff at the park.
"That view tho," she captioned the photo. The image was posted about three hours before she slipped and died.
Park rangers found her body about 400 feet from where she had been standing.
Park officials say Burns had been with family hiking and taking photographs of the sunrise on the trail. They announced her death Monday.
Burns died nearly two weeks after a California man fell to his death at the national park.
