Inside Ben Johnson's plan for Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams got a call on the highway from the powers that be at Halas Hall.

The conference call of Bears general manager Ryan Poles, Chairman George McCaskey, president Kevin Warren and chief administrative officer Ted Crews called the QB to tell him the news.

Ben Johnson is his new head coach. The decision makers at Halas Hall made a choice with him specifically in mind. Williams hung up and couldn't contain his excitement.

"I was driving on the highway and I don't know if it was safe or not, but I gave out a loud yell and scream of just excitement," Williams said. "It brings a bunch of clarity to the offseason. It brings a bunch of different things to the off season."

The clarity is simple: Williams will have an offseason to work with the most sought-after offensive mind in football.

Not only that, but he'll be playing for a coach that wants Williams to be at the epicenter at what the Bears want to do.

Johnson's top-rated offense led the Detroit Lions to consecutive NFC North titles and a head coach candidacy that put him at the top of head coaching wish lists across the league.

Now, Johnson gets to make an offense centered around Caleb Williams.

"This offense will be calibrated with him in mind," Johnson said. "This is not simply a dropping of a previous playbook down on the table and starting there. No, we're ripping this thing down to the studs and we're going to build it up with him first and foremost."

After Williams finished his call with the Bears' brass, they sent him Johnson's number to connect.

This is an important detail, considering how Williams was somehow duped with a prank call from a group of guys pretending to be Johnson. Williams laughed the prank call off on Wednesday, calling it great PR.

During that call, Williams made sure that it was actually Johnson and got to learn about his new head coach. What he saw was a competitive fire and a will want to win.

"He FaceTimed me and then sent me a picture of his face, because he also heard of the prank call," Williams said. "It starts with Ben and the rest of the coaches that he brings along."

Williams didn't glean too much from his call with Johnson – there's not much to take in from a quick call – but he learned he and Johnson are on the same mental wavelength.

"I think we have the same mindset," Williams said. "We sat down and talked and had the same mindset about scoring and all these different things."

One of the things they connected on is the ultimate goal with their offense in mind.

"At the end of the game when you shake hands and be respectful in those ways," Williams said. "But when you're on the football field, you want the other teams to feel as if you embarrassed them."

Now, Williams will have that chance to lead a terrifying and imposing offense, especially once where his talent acts as the heart beat.

He'll get to work soon, especially once he gets the cast off his hand from the minor procedure he had done to remove a cyst, but the ceiling is high and the possibilities are endless in Williams' eyes.

"I'm really excited about, obviously, the Bears, this (organization), and being able to make this happen," Williams said.
