Chicago weather: Dangerous wind chills linger as temps slowly rise

The Cold Weather Advisory for the Chicago area remains in effect until midnight as wind chills hover between -20 and -25.

Tonight’s temperatures will stay around zero until midnight before beginning to rise slightly. By sunrise, most areas will see temperatures between 5-10 degrees, with wind chills still dangerously low.

What we know:

Wednesday will bring some relief, with highs reaching the lower 20s in the afternoon. However, gusty south-southwest winds will keep wind chills at a brisk 10 degrees. The day will be mostly cloudy, with a chance of light snow in the evening.

The forecast looks steadier for Thursday and Friday, with highs in the lower 20s and sunshine returning by Friday.

What's next:

The weekend will finally bring a break from the deep freeze. Saturday’s highs are expected to rise above freezing, reaching the mid-30s. Sunday will be cooler, with highs in the upper 20s under mostly cloudy skies.

Looking ahead to next week, Monday will see highs in the lower 30s with partly cloudy skies, and Tuesday could bring a welcome warm-up, with temperatures climbing into the lower 40s.
