Chicago weather: Freezing rain, slick roads possible this week

Chicagoans should prepare for a messy week as two winter storms are set to bring freezing rain and slick roads to the region.

The first system moves in Wednesday, followed by another round of wintry weather on Saturday.

What we know:

Monday brought a wide range of temperatures across Chicagoland, from the upper 30s near the Wisconsin border to 60 degrees in the far south suburbs. However, cooler air is settling in, with lows expected to dip into the 20s overnight.

Tuesday will be calm, with partly sunny skies and highs near 30. But by Wednesday afternoon, the first winter system will move in, bringing freezing rain that could create icy conditions on roads. A mix of snow and even thunderstorms is possible before the system moves out early Thursday.

Thursday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the upper 30s, followed by another cooldown on Friday, with highs in the low 30s.

A second winter storm is expected to hit Saturday, once again bringing the risk of freezing rain and travel disruptions.

What's next:

After Saturday’s storm, conditions will dry out on Sunday, with temperatures in the lower 30s.

Another cooldown is expected Monday, with highs only reaching the upper 20s.
