May has been a weather roller coaster

May of 2016 has been far from consistent in the temperature department.

Chicago has experienced wild fluctuations in the temperature category. In fact, Chicago has seen five cases where the high temperature has dropped at least 12 degrees or more in a 24 hour period.

The average high temperature so far this May is 63 degrees through the 18th, compared to 70 through the first 18 days of last May.

Chicago has seen only five days with high temperatures of 70 or higher so far this May, compared to 10 days last May (through the 18th).

The average low temperature so far this May is 44 degrees, compared to 50 degrees through May 18th of 2015.

It’s also been a wetter than normal May with 3.66 inches of rain so far, which is 1.79 inches above normal. 3.06 inches of rain fell through May 18th of 2015.

The good news is that “blocking high pressure” will be dominating our weather pattern over the next several days, resulting in warmer and drier than average conditions and that pattern should continue through the end of the month.
