20 shot — 3 fatally — in Chicago this weekend

CHICAGO (Sun Times Media Wire) -- Three people have been killed and 17 others wounded in Chicago gun violence since Friday evening.
Much of the bloodshed reported this weekend unfolded Sunday, when at least 13 people were shot — one fatally. Two people were killed and four others were wounded on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the start of the weekend was markedly less violent, with only one shooting, which was nonfatal, documented on a snowy Friday.
The most recent gun homicide killed a man Sunday evening in the LeClaire Courts neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to police.
About 7:10 p.m., the 24-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 4600 block of South Lamon Avenue when someone approached him on foot and fired shots, Chicago police said.
He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died, according to police. No one was in custody.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released details about the fatality.
Another man died in a shooting Saturday afternoon in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.
About 6:40 p.m., 42-year-old Dwayne Jack was playing dice inside an apartment in the 5600 block of South Green Street when someone took out a handgun and opened fire, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
Jack was shot in his chest and stomach, and later died at the University of Chicago Medical Center, authorities said. He lived in the Roseland neighborhood.
A third man was killed early Saturday while buying a meal inside a restaurant in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side.
Just after 1 a.m., 29-year-old Warrick Smith II was ordering food inside a restaurant in the 10200 block of South State Street when someone burst inside with a gun and opened fire, authorities said.
Smith was shot in his chest and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died less than an hour later, authorities said. He lived in the same block where he was shot.
In nonfatal shootings, detectives were speaking with a person of interest after a man was shot by his girlfriend Sunday night in the West Side Austin neighborhood.
The 59-year-old man was involved in a “domestic-related altercation” about 7:50 p.m. in the 4800 bock of West Gladys Avenue, police said. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds during the incident and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition had stabilized.
Earlier Sunday, a man was wounded by gunfire from a drive-by shooting in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood on the West Side.
At 12:48 a.m., the 21-year-old was standing on a sidewalk when he was shot by someone inside a dark vehicle passing through the 2300 block of West 19th Street, police said. He was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Police were questioning four people after a shooter fired into a crowd of people fighting early Sunday in the the Near West Side neighborhood.
At 12:30 a.m., a 28-year-old man was shot after a brawl broke out in the 800 block of West Jackson Boulevard, police said. Someone fired a shot that struck the 28-year-old in the leg. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Officers pulled over a vehicle resembling what witnesses said the suspects drove away in, police said. Four people of interest inside were taken into police custody, and a weapon was recovered from the vehicle.
On Saturday night, a man was wounded in a shooting in the Illinois Medical District neighborhood on the Near West Side.
The 19-year-old was walking when two people wearing black ski masks walked up to him, fired shots and struck him in the hand at 9:29 p.m. in the 1200 block of South Oakley, police said. He took himself to Loretto Hospital where he was in good condition, police said.
Service on the Red Line was snarled for about three hours after a man was shot inside a CTA train Saturday morning near the Chinatown neighborhood’s Cermak station.
At 12:14 a.m., the 38-year-old was wounded as the train pulled into the stop near the 100 block of West Cermak, police said. He had gotten into a fight with another rider, a 24-year-old man who shot him in the abdomen. The older man took the gun away from the shooter and “battered” him, according to police, who said the men knew each other prior to the fight.
The 38-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital and the 24-year-old to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, both in serious condition. The older man now faces a battery charge.
The first shooting this weekend wounded a man Friday night in another domestic-related incident, this time in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.
Just after 9:30 p.m., a 47-year-old man was arguing with his girlfriend inside a home in the 6700 block of South Winchester Avenue when she opened fire, police said. He was struck in his shoulder and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized. The alleged shooter was arrested at the scene and charges were pending.
Last weekend, at least two people were killed and 13 others were wounded by shootings in Chicago.
