About 400 Chicago seniors displaced after water pipe bursts on Near West Side

About 400 elderly residents at a Near West Side building were displaced after a water pipe ruptured early Sunday morning.

The incident happened in the 1600 block of West Madison Street a little before 1 a.m., according to Chicago police.

What we know:

Officers responded to a call to help the fire department at the Patrick Sullivan Senior Apartments. Several residents were evacuated due to the burst pipe in the basement.

Police said about 400 residents were being relocated from the building. Some were taken to a The Congress Plaza Hotel for shelter.

Two residents, ages 70 and 84, were taken to a local hospital for evaluation with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

What we don't know:

Police did not give any indication of what may have caused the pipe to rupture.
