Man injured in shootout involving off-duty officers; one officer relieved of duties, Chicago police say

A man was seriously wounded during a shootout, which involved a car carrying two off-duty Chicago police officers, early Saturday morning in the Austin neighborhood.

What we know

The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. when a car occupied by five people, including the two off-duty officers, was parked in the 1000 block of South Mayfield Avenue, police said.

A 26-year-old man got out of the car and someone in another car began shooting and hit him.

During the incident, police said two people returned fire at the offender from inside the vehicle, including one off-duty officer. The offender eventually fled the scene.

The injured 26-year-old man was taken by the four other passengers to a local hospital where he was listed in serious condition.

Neither of the officers was injured during the shootout. No one is in custody.

The off-duty officer involved in the shooting has been relieved of police powers pending further investigation, according to the Chicago Police Department.

What we don't know

Chicago police have not yet identified the off-duty officer involved in the shooting.

The Investigative Response Team is also investigating the shooting. 

What is COPA?

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is the City of Chicago agency that investigates police shootings and alleged misconduct by CPD officers.

COPA is independent from the Chicago Police Department and staffed by civilian investigators.

The agency also has a role in recommending changes to CPD's policies, practices, collective bargaining agreements, programs and training.
