Decorated Marine Attacked by Robbers Asking If 'Black Lives Matter'
A decorated Marine says he was assaulted and robbed at a Washington D.C. McDonald’s on Friday by a group who asked him if “black lives mattered.”
Veteran Marine Sgt. Christopher Marquez earned a bronze star for his service in Iraq. He was famously photographed carrying out a fellow sergeant from the “Hell House” of the Battle of Fallujah - later adapted into two iconic “No Man Left Behind” statues. But on Friday, none of that seemed to matter to the huddle of four or five people who approached him at a Chinatown McDonald's, “trying to start a confrontation,” he said.
“The kids were asking me if I think that black lives mattered,” Marquez told The Marine Corps Times. “I was ignoring them, just because I felt intimidated. I felt how they approached me, it was very hostile.”
One of the suspects reportedly called the Marine a racist, and then hit him with a gun. He was then knocked unconscious, and his wallet was stolen. “It’s very ironic: being attacked by the people you [were] there to serve,” said Marquez.
