Fate of CPS CEO Pedro Martinez hangs in the balance ahead of Thursday Board Meeting

Pressure is mounting over the future of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Pedro Martinez as the Chicago Board of Education prepares for a critical meeting Thursday, where his fate may be decided.

The board’s agenda, expected to be released Tuesday, will likely reveal whether Martinez’s potential firing will be discussed.

At a press conference Monday, aldermen, principals and community members urged the board not to consider Martinez’s dismissal.

Earlier in the day, 21 aldermen sent a letter to the Board of Education arguing against a leadership change so close to the January 15 seating of a newly elected school board.

The spotlight on Martinez follows his rejection last week of a reported buyout offer from the current board amid tense contract negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU). CPS officials have said CTU’s proposed contract could cost $10 billion over four years if all union demands are met.

"While the circus is going on, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez has consistently shown up and brought stability amongst the turmoil. He has also continued to remain focused on good-faith negotiations while the CTU smears him in an attempt to create cause for firing," said Ald. Gilbert Villegas.

Supporters of Martinez praised his efforts to safeguard taxpayer interests while navigating the complex negotiations with CTU.
