Joliet police investigation: Shelter-in-place lifted, man charged in narcotics case

A police investigation in Chicago's southwest suburbs prompted a shelter-in-place Thursday morning before officials later said the situation was secure.

The Joliet Police Department said officers were conducting an investigation in the 400 block of Garnsey Avenue beginning around 9 a.m.

By 9:40 a.m., police said officers were executing a search warrant at a home as part of an ongoing investigation.

At 10:35 a.m., officials said the scene was secure and the shelter-in-place order for nearby residents had been lifted.

Police also confirmed that a man was detained at the scene.

The backstory:

Police later revealed the man as Sebastian Gates, 27, who was identified as a suspect in a narcotics-related case.

According to police, after officers made initial contact, Gates exited the residence. He was shortly detained at the scene. 

Officers say they recovered a handgun, ammunition, and suspected MDMA.

Gates has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of ammunition, lack of FOID card, and defacing identification marks of a firearm.
