New legislation clarifies Illinois' concealed-carry law
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Legislation took effect earlier this month that aims to clarify ambiguities in Illinois' concealed-carry law.
Some of the areas the bill focuses on are privacy, mental illness and dealing with law enforcement. It seeks to address issues that have been discovered since Illinois first enacted the right to carry concealed weapons in June 2013. The law went into effect in 2014.
The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports that Illinois' concealed-carry law is among the most stringent in the country.
The most significant changes relate to the process of applying for a concealed-carry permit, including a review of personal records and appealing a denial. The bill also requires concealed-carry holders to notify officers and secure their weapon if a first responder asks them to do so.
