HANOVER PARK, Ill. — Heavy police activity in Chicago's northwest suburbs stemmed from a 12-hour-long standoff involving an armed suicidal man, according to police.
What we know:
Officers with the Hanover Park Police Department responded around 10 p.m. Sunday to a home in the 6500 block of Church Street for reports of an armed suicidal subject.

Police said officers tried to make contact with a man inside a home while evacuating his family and nearby residences.
A prolonged standoff followed, with members of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team responding to assist.
Area schools were also notified and placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution.
During the encounter, police said at least two gunshots were fired inside the home.
After hours of negotiations, the man — identified only as a resident of Hanover Park — surrendered around 10 a.m. Monday and was taken into custody without incident, according to police.
The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
