Police: Car crashes into utility pole after driver overdoses in Upper Darby

A driver who crashed his vehicle into a utility pole in Delaware County was under the influence of heroin, according to Upper Darby police.

The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Edmonds Avenue and Township Line Road.

The car crashed into a utility pole, splitting it in half and wedging the vehicle between the pieces.

"How he didn't get killed or how he didn't kill somebody else is beyond belief," Upper Darby Police Superintendent Mike Chitwood said.

Police say it took three doses of Narcan to revive the driver. According to police, 27-year-old Ryan McClatchy was driving.

"We believe he passes out because he had snorted heroin just prior to the accident—don't remember the accident," Superintendent Chitwood said.

Police say McClatchy was treated and released then charged with DUI and reckless and careless driving.

"There are other charges pending because in his car in his wallet we found four additional bags of suspected heroin," Superintendent Chtiwood said.

A man who answered the door at McClatchy's home declined to speak on camera saying only that "this is private business."

"Heroin almost took his life and those driving in his vicinity," Upper Darby police tweeted. "When does it stop?"

No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
