Police fatally shoot pit bull, injure another in Englewood

CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - Chicago police officers shot two pit bulls, one fatally, Sunday afternoon in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. Officers responded about 1:30 p.m. To a call of two “vicious” dogs described as pit bulls attacking people in the 7000 block of South Aberdeen, police said.

“We didn't know who they belonged to or anything like that,” said Darren Henry a neighbor who first noticed the dogs around 10 Sunday morning then heard of an attack.

“The lady that warned us around the corner said they tried to get her and her little poodle and that’s why she ran up in the store,” said Henry.

An officer shot and wounded one of the dogs as the other one ran away, police said. The city’s animal control office took custody of the injured dog.

“It was quite a few shots, but I think they did their job, I’m not made at them for doing it because people should leash their dogs or keep them in the yards,” said Henry.

Police found the second dog in the 7000 block of South Carpenter where it was fatally shot, police said.

“As long as they are protecting little kids and other people its fine,” said neighbor Nate Hamlin.

No serious injuries were reported and the dogs’ owner still has not come forward.
