A 19-year-old man was shot to death Tuesday morning while attempting to rob a woman in the Fernwood neighborhood on the Far South Side.

About 5:45 a.m., Laavion Goings approached the woman, 25, in the 500 block of West 103rd Street, displayed a weapon and tried to rob her, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The woman, who was a concealed carry holder, took out her own weapon and fired one shot at Goings, striking him in the neck, authorities said.

Goings left the scene and was found a block away, officials said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died.

Goings lived about a block away from where he was shot, the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy Wednesday found he died of a gunshot wound to his chest and his death was ruled a homicide.

He had been arrested this past June after he was found in possession of a controlled substance and attacked a police officer, police said.

About 6:50 p.m. on June 7, 2018, Goings was identified as the target of a search warrant in the 5900 block of S. Elizabeth Street, police said.

During his arrest he punched a police officer and then caused damage to a CPD vehicle while being taken in for processing, police said.

He was additionally charged with aggravated battery of an officer, resisting an officer and criminal damage to government property, police said.

The shooting remained under investigation, and no charges had been filed against the woman as of Wednesday afternoon, police said.
