Surveillance video shows aftermath of West Town carjacking

CHICAGO (FOX 32 NEWS) - Chicago Police are searching for the suspects behind an armed carjacking that was caught on camera Thursday in the West Town neighborhood.

Surveillance video captured just after 10 p.m. shows the victim parked in a loading zone while his wife shops inside The Noble Grape liquor store in the 1400 block of West Chicago Avenue.

The footage showed a person in a dark hoodie walking by and initiating a scuffle. More people are seen running away before the victim runs inside.

“He's like, ‘I just  got carjacked. These people are taking my car. Help me out. Call the police,’” Noble Grape Co-owner Alex Basich said.

Basich said the victim is a regular customer and identifies the person in the hoodie as the suspect putting a small caliber weapon to the victim’s head and telling him to get out out his car.

Police said the gunman's getaway car can be seen speeding out of frame, after two other men jump into the victim's BMW and drive away.

Store associate Drew Doyle is seen running to lock the store door.

“I was kind of concerned about the safety first, making sure everyone is in a safe spot, so I locked the doors immediately,” Doyle said.

The carjacking marks the second violent incident in the area after Jesus De La O-Jimenez was shot and killed in the same neighborhood last week during the early morning hours when police say he refused to give up his keys during a carjacking.

“It seems like this day and age there's a lot more crime going around this neighborhood. Never before have I seen it. I've lived here over 20 years.”

Chicago Police said they do not believe the two carjackings are related. They encourage everyone to be vigilant, to not sit inside vehicles for too long and to not resist if you find yourself getting robbed.
