Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of Illinois deputy in Avon
AVON (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A suspect was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a Fulton County sheriff's deputy during a barricade situation Tuesday in rural Avon in central Illinois.
Deputy Troy Chisum, 39, was responding to a battery and disturbance call about 2 p.m. Tuesday when a man fired multiple shots, Illinois State Police said. Chisum, a four-and-a-half year veteran of the Fulton County sheriff's office, was killed in the shooting.
The suspect then barricaded himself a home in Avon, a town of less than 1,000 people almost 50 miles west of Peoria.
Multiple agencies, including a state police SWAT team, responded to the barricade and the 42-year-old Avon man was taken into custody without incident about 8:20 a.m., state police said. Formal charges against him are pending.
"On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum," Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard said. "Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered."
