VIDEO: Connecticut house being raised slides off pilings

A house in Connecticut repeatedly damaged and rebuilt after Superstorm Sandy and other storms slid off concrete pilings just as it was being raised in case of future flooding.

Cell phone video shared by neighbor Renee Capece shows crews attempting to move the one-story home from wooden pilings to permanent concrete pilings on Monday. The video shows the structure suddenly shifting and sliding off the pilings.

The support structure failed, The New Haven Register reported. The house teetered for some time before officials ordered it to be taken down and demolished.

One worker was hurt in the accident and was taken to Milford Hospital to be treated.

The home, built in 1953, was located at Cooper Avenue just a few hundred feet from the shoreline of the Long Island Sound. WTNH-TV reported that the owner decided to raise the house because it had been flooded three times—in 1992, in 2011 during Hurricane Irene, and again in 2012 in Sandy.

Several homes in the neighborhood have been raised because of the flood risk.
