Wilmette burglary suspect arrested at Evanston Metra station
SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A man was arrested at a Metra station Wednesday morning in north suburban Evanston, prompting temporary delays on the Union Pacific-North Line.
Evanston officers assisted the Wilmette and Kenilworth police departments with the arrest of a burglary suspect shortly before 5 a.m. at the Central Street train station, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew.
The incident started when officers in Kenilworth tried to pull over a vehicle that was speeding near Sheridan and Kenilworth avenues in Kenilworth, according to a statement from Wilmette police. The vehicle drove off and the driver eventually got out and ran away on foot.
At some point, the suspect tried to break into a business in Wilmette, according to Wilmette police. He then ran away again, and responding officers saw him get onto a southbound Metra train.
The train was stopped at Central Street in Evanston and police took the man into custody, authorities said. Glew said Evanston police were called to assist in the arrest when the man struggled with officers trying to take him into custody.
The man, whose exact age was not immediately known, was taken to Evanston Hospital for treatment, Glew said. It was not immediately clear whether the man was injured in the struggle or whether he had suffered injuries at some point before his arrest.
Trains on the UP-North line were running up to 25 minutes behind schedule about 8 a.m. because of the police activity, according to service alerts from Metra. Normal service has since resumed.
