TAKING BACK POWER FROM THE MAYOR: A group of Chicago aldermen are backing a newly-drafted ordinance which would reallocate power from Mayor Lightfoot to the 50-member City Council.

Members of the Chicago City Council began questioning top aides to Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Friday about her proposal to spend nearly $17 billion next year.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pitched a pilot program Monday giving $500 monthly payments to low-income households.

Mayor Lightfoot is using federal coronavirus relief funds to postpone difficult decisions the city would otherwise face, while spending $200 million more on police, $135 million on violence prevention and $86 million more on mental health treatment.

Ald. James Cappleman (46th) was attacked during a disturbance Saturday night in Uptown, Chicago police said.

"For the people who are critics, what I'd like to do is ask them to walk the streets of places like West Garfield Park, Austin, Roseland, other neighborhoods, Englewood, across our city, where our people are afraid to come out of their homes," Lightfoot said.

"I take full responsibility for my offensive words in those messages."

Chicago police have their first new contract in four years.
