9 killed, 42 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Nine people were killed and at least 42 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday evening and Sunday night.

The weekend’s latest killing happened Sunday afternoon in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. Travis R. Harris, 18, was found at 4:23 p.m. lying on the ground in the 4900 block of West West End, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Harris had been shot in the torso and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5 p.m. He lived on the same block as the shooting.

Two hours earlier, a man was killed and another wounded in a Roseland shooting on the Far South Side. About 2:15 p.m., 19-year-old Keith Hayes Jr. was standing with a 21-year-old man on a sidewalk in the 11100 block of South Michigan when a gunman walked up, opened fire and then ran away, authorities said. They were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where Hayes died of a gunshot wound to the hip at 10:27 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the 11300 block of South Stewart. The older man was shot in the leg and his condition was stabilized.

About 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a man was fatally shot in the West Elsdon neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Luis Villa, 36, was sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car in the 5600 block of South Kolmar when a silver vehicle pulled alongside and someone inside opened fire, authorities said. Villa, who lived on the same block, was shot in the side of his torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.

About 10 p.m. Saturday, a man was gunned down in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side. Adama Moye, 22, was sitting in a car parked in the first block of West 98th Street when a dark vehicle pulled alongside and someone inside fired shots, authorities said. Moye, of the 4900 block of South Dorchester, was shot in the chest and taken to Christ Medical Center, where he died at 10:41 p.m.

Saturday afternoon, a man was shot to death in the Far South Side Washington Heights neighborhood. Elijah Terry, 23, was standing outside at 3:39 p.m. in the 10100 block of South Halsted when another male walked up, pulled a gun and opened fire, authorities said. Terry was shot in the face and was taken to Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 p.m. He lived in the 1100 block of West 107th Place.

About 1:45 a.m. Saturday, officers responding to a call of a person shot at a gas station in the 8200 block of South State in the South Side Chatham neighborhood found a 23-year-old man in a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. Rushun Markis Gaddis was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:59 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Gaddis lived in the 8000 block of South Manistee.

Forty-five minutes earlier, 54-year-old Cynthia D. Richardson was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the neck on the lawn of a West Englewood neighborhood home in the 5900 block of South Winchester, authorities said. Richardson, who lived in the 2100 block of West 63rd Street, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Late Friday, an 18-year-old man was slain about eight blocks from the other Chatham neighborhood killing. Deon Virges ran into a store about 11 p.m. in the first block of East 75th Street, collapsed and died of a gunshot wound to the neck, authorities said. Virges, who lived in the 7500 block of South Calumet, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:11 p.m.

The weekend’s first homicide happened about 5 p.m. Friday in the Austin neighborhood. Seneka Harrison, 18, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest in an alley in the 4700 block of West Congress, authorities said. Harrison, of the 1800 block of South Homan, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:41 p.m.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened at 10:57 p.m. Sunday in the West Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. A 20-year-old woman was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by a 21-year-old man in the 200 block of West 76th Street when a dark vehicle pulled alongside and someone inside fired shots in their direction, police said. The woman suffered a graze wound to the head and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was treated and released. The man was not wounded.

At least 40 more people were shot in other attacks across Chicago between 5:45 p.m. Friday and 11 p.m. Sunday.

Additionally, a 25-year-old Indianapolis man, Joshua Beal, was shot and killed by Chicago Police Saturday afternoon in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood on the Far South Side.
