These baby names are at risk of going extinct in 2026

Not all baby names continue to grow in popularity — and some could even be on the verge of extinction.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of parents register their babies' names on the BabyCenter app, and the parenting company tracks the naming trends.

But while some names are climbing fast, others are sliding off the charts.

BabyCenter dug into the data to find out which names in the top 1,000 took the biggest fall from 2024 to 2025 – and what it reveals about the naming trends parents are leaning away from right now.

Unique spellings, names inspired by places are out

Big picture view:

According to the data, nontraditional spellings of popular names, like Charleigh, Alivia, Maddison, Emmitt, and Mohamad, are on the outs.

In addition, baby names inspired by places such as Malaysia, Dallas, and London are down for girls, while Boston is down for boys.

Boy names ending in -y are also falling fast. BabyCenter said Huxley, Grady, Rey, Corey, and Harry are on their way out of the top 1,000.

Also, names that start with D and K are being left behind. Danielle, Dylan, Kenna, and Kinley are down for girls, while Dominic, Dev, Kylian, and Karim are down for boys.

Most popular baby names of 2025, trends for 2026

In November, BabyCenter released its annual baby name popularity and name trends reports.

The data showed that the most popular names in 2025 were Noah and Olivia, with some shakeups in the top 10 on both sides.

For girls, Eliana made its way into the top 10 at No. 7, and Aurora made her debut at No. 9, bumping out Ava and Luna.

Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Luca reclaimed a top 10 spot, pushing Leo out.

The Source: The information for this story was provided by BabyCenter, which drew its analysis from the top 1,000 baby names for each gender from data submitted by BabyCenter parents about babies born in 2025 (pulled Nov. 3, 2025). From there, the company looked at which names saw the steepest year-over-year declines compared to 2024. This story was reported from Los Angeles. Previous FOX Local reporting contributed.
