Bears fans appreciate extra security so they can feel safe

FOX 32 NEWS - After bombings in New York and a stabbing attack in Minnesota, states, including Illinois, are on high alert.

The attacks come less than two weeks after a warning by Homeland Security that stadiums could become targets of terrorism.

At Soldier Field, new security measures were already put in place before the attacks over the weekend, but many still say it's a welcomed sight after the bombing in New York.

The new rules at Soldier Field may also take some getting used to, but fans say they're willing to do what it takes to stay safe.

Bears fans started tailgating early, with some chowing down on Philly Cheesesteaks, saying they want the Bears to eat the Eagles for breakfast.

Being competitive isn't anything new for Bears fans. What is, though, is tighter security at Soldier Field.

"I had, it was about this size, cross body purse. And the guy flagged us down and he said, 'you can't bring your purse in here.' I'm like, well crap, we walked from the parking garage what are we going to do? And we had to walk all the way over there and pay 10 dollars just for a locker,” said Nicole Croft.

Thankfully, at the end of the long walk to the lockers, plastic bags are waiting for fans who don't know that you can no longer bring in purses larger than a clutch.

"You trade in your nice, pretty purse for a beautiful, clear plastic bag,” Croft said while laughing.

It may not be the nicest fashion statement, but it’s one that seems to keep fans feeling safe.

"Yeah, it's awesome and we feel safe. So it works out,” said Duane LaRosa.

Many fans that FOX 32 spoke with agree.

"I'm all for any kind of security measures,” said Cynthia Bertagnolli. "You hate to be nervous about things, because you want to enjoy life. But, yet nowadays you go to something like this and you just hope for the best."

Fans were also greeted with metal detectors, which is something now seen across NFL stadiums.

Security experts say police need to be vigilant at large sporting events, even more so now, they say, in light of the bombings in New York.

Entry into the stadium appeared to run smoothly, and fans told FOX 32 they appreciate the stricter security so that they can enjoy the game.
