Illinois delegates descend upon day one of DNC

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - While the Illinois delegation in Philadelphia is firmly controlled by the Hillary Clinton campaign, it does include dozens of Bernie Sanders supporters. Some are angry at revelations that former Party Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and her colleagues sought to embarrass Sanders, even prompting reporters to ask him if he believed in God.

"I think the dirty tricks that have been a part of this campaign are despicable," said Jesus Chuy Garcia, a Sanders supporter. "Nonetheless, I think the party has been responsive and has recognized its errors."

With so many ambitious Democrats in one place in Philadelphia, backroom maneuvering is underway among potential candidates for Illinois governor in 2018: US Sen Duck Durbin, State Sen Kwame Raoul and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan. She's a daughter of longtime House Speaker Mike Madigan. Here's what the Speaker said when asked if he's talked to his daughter about running for governor.

"Not recently, not recently. What else have we got here," Madigan said.

State Sen. Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago) showed a great deal of interest in the position.

"Certainly. I mean I would want any position that would put me in a position to solve problems," Raoul said.

U.S. Sen Dick Durbin (R-Illinois) said his mind is focussed on the upcoming presidential election.

"Don't waste time on an election that is 30 months away. A much more important election is coming in a few months. And focus on getting a budget for Illinois, which we still desperately need."

For those wishing to focus on the convention, when the opening session convenes later Monday, speakers will include Michelle Obama, Sen Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
