Judge to wage write-in campaign against fired county clerk
CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - A former Chicago law clerk who was fired after allegedly taking the bench to hear minor cases will now face opposition in her judgeship race.
The Chicago Tribune reports that a judge ruled Wednesday that Cook County Judge Maryam Ahmad can wage a write-in campaign against Rhonda Crawford. The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners previously said Ahmad couldn't run against Crawford because she had lost a primary.
Crawford was fired last month after Judge Valarie E. Turner allowed her to put on a robe and hear traffic cases. Chief Judge Timothy Evans removed Turner from the bench indefinitely.
Crawford plans a Thursday morning news conference.
Election board spokesman James Allen says the election ballot has a space for voters to write in a name in a contest between Ahmad and Crawford.
