Man charged after seven injured in Homan Square crash

CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - A west suburban man is facing felony drug charges after he and six other people — including four children — were injured in a two-car crash late Tuesday in the Homan Square neighborhood on the West Side.
About 11 p.m., Charles Collins was speeding in a 2008 Chevrolet southbound in the 700 block of South Central Park when his vehicle rear-ended a 1998 Lincoln stopped in traffic, according to Chicago Police.
Six people inside the Lincoln were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including an 8-week-old girl; a 4-year-old girl; a 5-year-old boy; an 8-year-old boy; a 14-year-old girl; and the 35-year-old woman driving, police said.
Collins, 21, was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, authorities said.
He was later charged with two felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, police said. He also faces charges of driving on a suspended license, failure to reduce speed, and leaving the scene of a crash; and also had a warrant out for his arrest.
Collins, who lives in the 1000 block of Greenwood Avenue in Maywood, was ordered held at the Cook County Jail on a $250,000 bond, court records show. He is next scheduled to appear in court July 26.
