Tornadoes in south central Illinois cause major damage

HAVANA, Illinois (Fox 32 News) - The National Weather Service said that 12 tornadoes hit near Peoria, Illinois, on Saturday, causing major damage.

A tornado hit Taylorville around 5:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service and local law enforcement.

The Taylorville Fire Department reported that there was major damage in that area, according to the Taylorville Breeze-Courier. There were reports that many people were trapped in their cars and homes because of debris and downed power lines.

The hardest hit areas were around Taylorville High School, the Breeze-Courier reported.

NewsTalk WTIM radio reported that there were some houses that had very severe damage and were possibly destroyed. The police chief told the radio station as of 7:40 p.m. that there were no major injuries known at that time.
