2 killed in wrong-way crash on I-94 near 63rd

Two people were killed following a wrong-way crash Saturday morning on the Dan Ryan Expressway near 63rd Street.

Just before 11 a.m., a 53-year-old Naperville man was driving a Chevy Equinox the wrong way in the I-94 southbound lanes near 63rd Street when he struck a semi-truck and a Nissan Sentra head-on, Illinois State Police said.

The wrong-way driver and a woman riding in the Nissan were both transported to area hospitals and later pronounced dead, according to police. The woman was identified as 66-year-old Teresa Sandoval, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy conducted ruled Sandoval’s death an accident, the medical examiner’s office said.

The driver of the Equinox was identified as Douglas Memler, the medical examiner’s office said.

The driver of the Nissan, a 66-year-old man, was also transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

All southbound traffic was diverted onto the I-94 express lanes until about 6:50 p.m.
