A nice weekend in store for us - finally! Got cabin fever? Then it's time to get out of the house and do a little late winter hiking.
Forest preserves around Chicago are always a good nearby choice, maybe a little waterfall glen near Argonne National Lab? But if you are a little more adventuresome, and had an extra day or so, you might consider making the drive to Bayfield, Wis. and checking out the ice caves at the Apostle Island National Lakeshore!
This is the second year in a row that you can make the mile long walk out onto the frozen waters of Lake Superior to the caves. It's a trip that you can make on average about once every four years, because most winters the ice is not solid enough.
If you make the trip, the Rittenhouse Inn is always a favorite - either to stay or simply for an outstanding meal. In the summer, I love Madeline Island. A great place to bike swim or camp! Either way, get out this weekend and enjoy life!
