1 killed, 5 wounded in Tuesday shootings across Chicago
CHICAGO (STMW) - A man was killed and at least five others were wounded in shootings across the city on Tuesday, according to Chicago Police.
The homicide happened about 6:15 p.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.
A 20-year-old man was walking in the 4400 block of South Hermitage Avenue when someone got out of a car, walked up to him and shot him repeatedly, police said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the fatality.
It was Chicago’s first fatal shooting since Saturday afternoon, a span of nearly 75 hours that marked the city’s longest stretch so far in 2016 without a shooting homicide.
The latest nonfatal attack left a person critically wounded in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. A male victim was shot in the upper body at 6:34 p.m. in the 1300 block of South Homan and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, but police did not immediately have more information.
Tuesday afternoon, a 26-year-old man was shot while sitting in a vehicle in East Garfield Park’s 2800 block of West Polk. About 2:15 p.m., another vehicle approached and two people got out, with at least one person opening fire and hitting the man in both arms, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
About 1:30 p.m., a 30-year-old man was shot in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was walking in the 1200 block of South Troy when someone walked up and shot him in the side. Friends drove the man to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, police said.
Just before 9 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the ankle in another East Garfield Park shooting. He showed up at Norwegian American Hospital after the gang-related attack in the 700 block of North St. Louis Avenue, police said. He was listed in good condition.
Tuesday’s first shooting happened about 1:40 a.m. in West Pullman on the Far South Side. A 24-year-old man was standing on a corner in the 300 block of West 116th Street about when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot in the buttocks. The documented gang member was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized, police said.
In addition to the gunfire, a 25-year-old man was stabbed to death during a fight in West Garfield Park about 5:45 p.m. in the 3900 block of West Jackson, police said.
The city’s bloody first day of March followed a February that saw at least 185 people shot in Chicago, 33 of them fatally; and 293 shot in January, including 53 fatal victims.
