Man killed, 5 wounded in Thursday shootings

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A man was shot to death and at least five others were wounded in shootings on the South and West sides of Chicago Thursday.
The homicide happened about 6 a.m. in West Pullman on the Far South Side.
Anthony Bowers, 63, was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head in the 12000 block of South Michigan Avenue, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Bowers, who lived on the same block, was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The latest nonfatal attack was one of three Austin neighborhood shootings that occurred between noon and midnight.
At 11:55 p.m., a 19-year-old man was driving eastbound in the 5600 block of West Division when someone in a dark car coming from the other direction opened fire. He was shot in the left leg and crashed the car into a pole.
He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was stabilized, police said.
Shortly before 3 p.m., two men were wounded in the 5400 block of West Madison.
Officers responding to a call of shots fired found a 36-year-old man on the ground with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.
A 41-year-old man shot in the arm was also at the scene and told investigators he had been on the other side of the street when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. His condition was stabilized at Mount Sinai Hospital.
The younger man wasn’t cooperative with police, who said he has documented gang ties. His condition was stabilized at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, police said.
About 12:45 p.m., a 33-year-old man got into a fight in the 100 block of South Central with someone who then shot him in the right leg. He was taken to Mount Sinai, where his condition stabilized, police said.
Less than an hour earlier, a 61-year-old man was robbed and shot in West Englewood.
About noon, he was inside an establishment in the 6800 block of South Ashland when two men with guns walked in and announced a robbery. At least one of them opened fire, hitting the 61-year-old in the ankle. They made off with his cell phone and an unspecified amount of cash, and took off in a dark-colored vehicle, police said.
The wounded man was taken to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.
