Pfleger optimistic that Tyshawn's murder will be solved very soon

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Chicago police continue to move forward in the murder investigation of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee. The little boy was gunned down, execution-style, in an alley near his grandmother's home earlier this month.

Corey Morgan, 27, and 21-year-old Dwight Doty were taken into custody last week, each considered a person of interest in the case.

However, Morgan posted bail on $1 million bond and was released.

"We believe that Tyshawn was targeted, lured to this spot and murdered," said Supt. Garry McCarthy.

Police say Tyshawn was killed as an act of revenge for the death of Morgan’s brother.

A week after his death, crisis responder Andrew Holmes summarized the case against any potential suspects.

“You know what, there's an old saying, you can run but you can't hide. But if you are long gone, you'll be brought back, it's just a matter of time,” Holmes said.

The week following Tyshawn’s death, his memorial burned down and his mother came under fire for using money from a funeral account to buy a car.

“Am I afraid for my life? 100 percent I’m afraid for my life,” said Tyshawn’s mother, Karla Lee.

And his father has refused to cooperate with police, even though his alleged gang ties are blamed for Tyshawn’s murder.

"Why look for me like I did this to my own son, I didn't do anything, you think I wanted this for my son," said Pierre Stokes.

At Tyshawn’s funeral, Father Michael Pfleger blamed the community for perpetuating the cycle of violence that led to the young boy’s murder.

"Nobody can say they honor Tyshawn and not do something to change the society that brings us here today. Nobody has a right to bring up his name without making a change in your house, in your block, in your neighborhood, in your city," Pfleger said.

Tyshawn’s mother is blaming a ‘no snitch’ policy for the time it’s taken to track down her son's killer.

“Step up, break this code of silence or whatever ya'll got going on with this gang stuff, break that, put the guns down, ya'll killing babies out here,” Lee said.

Father Michael Pfleger has remained close to the developments in this investigation. He told FOX 32 he's optimistic the case will be resolved very soon.
