Larry Snelling defends CPD amid heated clash over alleged ICE cooperation
Meeting on interactions between CPD and ICE
The Chicago Police Department holding a meeting tonight discussing their interactions with ICE agents. Our Joanie Lum has more on their message to the community.
CHICAGO - Chicago police superintendent Larry Snelling told an angry audience on Thursday that officers were keeping the public safe during protests and confrontations between people and federal agents.
He was questioned by members of the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability, in what they called an urgent meeting.
The discussion was heated, with members of the audience interrupting and shouting, and being removed.
Speakers told the superintendent they saw police collaborating with ICE and Customs and Border Patrol agents, in violation of the city’s welcoming ordinance.
They questioned why police are not investigating the actions of immigration enforcement agents who they say committed crimes.
They asked if federal agents were given special treatment.
Ten people got to address the superintendent directly.
Snelling said this meeting would have been more productive if it involved more people from the community, rather than activists.
The commission also recommended the Office of the Inspector General investigate police activity related to immigration enforcement.
