Strangers rescue driver after fiery crash kills man on South Side

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire/FOX 32) - A crash early Sunday left one driver dead and another critically injured in the South Chicago neighborhood, police said.

About 3:30 a.m., a man driving a 2008 Chevy Impala north on Yates Boulevard was struck by a male driver of a 2015 Toyota Corolla who drove through a red light on 83rd Street, according to Chicago Police.

The car that was hit was thrown into Joan Robbins' home.

“I can't even describe the sound, because there's nothing like that I ever heard before,” she said.

The man driving the Impala was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other driver was taken in critical condition to University of Chicago Medical Center.

Keith Hunt says he and two other men saved one of the men from a burning car.

The crash killed 23-year-old Michael Rudolph, who was driving home from work. The driver who allegedly hit Rudolph's car was trapped inside his own car, but still alive.

Cellphone video shows Hunt, his friend Faheem Shabazz and a third neighbor pulling the injured driver from the car while it was in flames.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office hasn’t released details about the death.

No other injuries were reported. The Major Accidents team was investigating.
