While it only takes a thin coating of ice to cause travel nightmares for motorists, it takes a heavier accretion of ice to damage trees and power lines, and the severity of the damage depends on how much weight is added by the ice.

Every day this year has been warmer than normal based on official Chicago data at O’Hare. 

Snow is moving through Chicagoland this evening and some parts of the area may see as much as 1-2".

Today will be mostly cloudy with a chance of light snow south of I-80, while the next storm system is expected to impact central Illinois and Indiana more significantly than Chicago.

Light snow will move in Thursday afternoon and continue into the evening. Then, all attention will turn to the cold.

Temperatures above freezing may be hard to come by for most of the next three weeks across Chicago.
