Driver issued 4 tickets after crashing into CTA bus, injuring 11

CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - Nearly a dozen people were hurt in a crash after an SUV turned in front of an oncoming CTA bus Tuesday in Back of the Yards.

The SUV was southbound about 6:30 a.m. in the 4100 block of South Ashland when the driver tried to make a left turn in front of the northbound bus, according to Chicago police and fire officials. It was then hit by the bus.

Eleven people were injured in the crash, including two who were transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, the fire department said.

The two patients at Stroger were the 25-year-old man driving the SUV and the driver of the bus, police said. The bus driver has since been stabilized, but the 25-year-old remains in critical condition.

Seven people were taken to University of Illinois-Chicago, Mercy and Rush hospitals in good condition, the fire department said. Two more were taken to UIC and Mercy hospitals in serious condition.

Seven of those people, including a 3-year-old girl, were passengers on the bus, police said.

The 25-year-old man was cited with failure to stay in his lane, failure to reduce speed, driving with an invalid license and driving while uninsured, police said.
