Police: Drugs, loaded gun found near kids in Dolton day care center

CHICAGO (STMW) - Four people were arrested after police found drugs and a loaded handgun in a south suburban home that operates as a day care center on Thursday afternoon.
Officers executed a search warrant at the home in the 14400 block of South Kimbark Avenue in Dolton at 3:45 p.m., according to a statement from Chicago Police. Children were in the home at the time of the search.
Upon entering the home, officers smelled “a strong odor of cannabis which permeated throughout the building,” police said. They also found a mason jar containing marijuana in an unsecured area accessible to children.
More marijuana, codeine bottles and a loaded handgun were found in a locked room “very close to the children’s play area,” according to police.
Maverick Magee, 28; and Charlene Woodard, 50, who live in the block where the warrant was executed, were taken into custody, police said. Also arrested were 25-year-old Donzell James of the 8600 block of South Ingleside in Chicago; and 25-year-old Deshawn Boswell of the 8100 block of South Ingleside in Chicago.
Magee was charged with a felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, two misdemeanor counts of marijuana possession, two misdemeanor counts of possessing ammunition without an FOID card and a misdemeanor count of child endangerment, according to police.
James was charged with a felony count of marijuana possession and a misdemeanor count of having contact with a street gang while on parole, police said. Boswell was also charged with having contact with a gang while on parole. Woodard was charged with a misdemeanor count of child endangerment, police said.
All four were scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.
