A driver has been charged for a rollover crash that left his vehicle upside down in a ravine Sunday night in north suburban Highland Park.

The mother of 8-year-old Cooper Roberts has shared new details about his recovery after he was wounded six months ago in the July 4 parade massacre in Highland Park.

Wednesday marked six months since a gunman opened fire during Highland Park’s Fourth of July parade – leaving seven people dead and dozens more injured.

Cooper’s spinal cord was severed by a bullet, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. He also suffered organ damage and continues to receive therapy following the shooting at a July 4 celebration in Highland Park.

"Robert Crimo Jr., again the father, took a reckless and unjustified risk when he decided on Dec. 16, 2019, to sign his son's application for a firearm owner's ID, or FOID card. At the time he signed the application, his son was 19 and could not — let me say that again — could not get a FOID card, and because of that, could not legally purchase a firearm without his father's assistance in that application process," Lake County officials said.

Democrats who control the General Assembly are positioning a wide-ranging gun law for a vote as early as next month, during a lame-duck session. That follows Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s call last summer for a semi-automatic weapons ban.
