5 killed, 22 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

Five people were killed and at least 22 others wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend.

A 7-year-old girl was killed and her father was seriously wounded in a shooting Sunday afternoon as they were getting food at a McDonald’s drive-thru in the Homan Square neighborhood.

The father, Jontae Adams, 28, and his daughter, Jaslyn, were in a silver Infiniti about 4:20 p.m. at the McDonald’s, 3200 W. Roosevelt Road, when they were shot, Chicago police said.

The girl was shot repeatedly and was taken by police officers to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

Her father was shot in the torso and also taken to Stroger, where his condition was listed as serious, police said.

Police said the shooting was believed to be gang-related, and less than three hours later, two people were shot in their car at a Popeyes in Humboldt Park, which investigators believe is connected to the McDonald’s shooting.

A 33-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were in a blue Chevy Malibu, having just ordered food, at the Popeyes drive-thru window at Chicago and Kedzie, when a gunman pulled up in a car at 7:12 p.m and opened fire. The man was shot in the left leg; the woman in the abdomen. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital, with the man in serious condition, the woman in critical.

Sunday night, a man was killed and another man wounded in a shooting in Austin on the West Side.

The two men were standing on the sidewalk about 11:20 p.m. in the 4900 block of West Madison Street when a male in a silver SUV fired shots at them, police said.

One man, 43, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not yet identified the man.

The other man, 22, was struck in the right leg and transported to the same hospital in good condition, police said.

Saturday night, a 33-year-old man was killed in a shooting in Lawndale on the West Side.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert about 10:30 p.m. and found the man unresponsive in an alley in the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, police said.

He was transported to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 3:40 a.m. Sunday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. The medical examiner’s office identified him as Devon Jackson, a resident of Longwood Manor.

A 25-year-old man was fatally shot early Saturday in Morgan Park on the Far South Side.

Verico Veal was riding in a vehicle about 2:45 a.m. in the 11800 block of South Marshfield Avenue when a male in a silver or white SUV fired shots, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Veal was struck in the chest, arm and hand and driven to Franciscan Health in Olympia Fields where he was pronounced dead, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

A shooting Friday night at a Lawndale business left an 18-year-old man dead and a woman wounded, according to police.

About 7 p.m., a person entered the business in the 3600 block of West 16th Street and began firing shots, police said.

The man was struck in the chest and face and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Jawon L. Ward, a resident of Englewood.

The woman, 44, was shot in the shoulder and back and was taken in good condition to the same hospital, police said.

In nonfatal attacks, two men were critically wounded in a drive-by Sunday in Englewood on the South Side.

About 9 p.m., the men, 37 and 38, were sitting in a parked gray sedan in the 7400 block of South Stewart Avenue when someone inside a passing white sedan opened fire, police said.

The 37-year-old was struck in the face and chest, and the older man was struck in the chest, police said. They were both brought to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Early Sunday, a 17-year-old girl was shot in Heart of Chicago on the Lower West Side.

The girl was riding in a vehicle about 12:50 a.m. in the 1700 block of West Cermak Road when two males exited a black vehicle and fired shots, police said. She was struck in the head and driven to Mt. Sinai Hospital where she was listed in fair condition, police said.

At least 14 other people were wounded in shootings between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday in Chicago.

Last weekend, 28 people were shot, 4 fatally, in Chicago.
