A senior Chicago Public Schools official had notified Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s reelection campaign that soliciting student volunteers through their teachers was not permitted hours before the campaign publicly defended its recruitment effort as a “common practice,” email records show.

The Chicago Board of Ethics on Monday asked inspectors general for the city and Chicago Public Schools to investigate Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s re-election campaign to determine if the campaign violated the city’s ethics ordinance by recruiting student volunteers at CPS and City Colleges in exchange for class credit.

Two dozen CPS high schools are being recognized for having a high number of female students take part in their AP computer science programs.

This is completely unethical, a hypocritical contradiction to her campaign promises of better government, and a disgraceful exploitation of public school students," said mayoral candidate Eugene Sawyer.

One high school teacher allegedly exchanged 4,000 text messages with a female student, including 400 in one day. The teacher said he was in an open marriage and was "attracted to other people."
